    chapter 8

    Hi everyone

Well my class has been working on chapter 8 for the last few days. We did some of the nomenclature stuff earlier (I like to start with particle pictures (dalton diagrams) early on. It's really easy for kids to learn nomenclature if you start with ppics, and I introduce molecular mass almost immediately. (If you pronounce it "mole-cule" and "mole-cular" instead of mullah kewl, the switch from mole-kewl mass to molar mass is really easy too.

I avoid all that carbon 12…

Interesting Link - Reading Ability at 15 a predictor of success?

This is an interesting link. Not directly related to Chemistry, but clearly a key if we're going to engage our kids in a

manner that encourages them to explore the possibilities a

science-based career might offer. I like the focus on high school ....

that's long been ignored in favour of support at elementary level.…

Five Topics : understanding science (Re: Thoughts on the nature of teaching science in the 21st century)

This is an interesting thread on the ChemEd-L discussion list.

Might generate some thoughts here as well....

    Welcome Back!

    We have an eReader!!

    Hello Everyone,

I'm excited to announce that we have Chemistry Interactions 11 available in eReader format for our community members and their students.

You can find each chapter at the new community Wiki. Check it out and see the work text in colour!

For those of you unfamiliar with a Wiki concept, you can access each page in the Wiki just like a regular web page. If you would like to add something to the page you can do this by registering as a member. This gives you access to making changes to the page. Or put another way, you control the content on the page.

These files are available until the end of June. Over the summer we'll be tweaking the Wiki and eReader based on your feedback. Then in September we'll shift the Wiki to Chemistry Interactions users only.

If you're still looking for the first three files in pdf format, they're here:

    DIGITAL FILES - Chapters 1, 2, 3

The Model of Science in Laboratory Exercises - JIM ROSS

This discussion is an opportunity to discuss the Box Diagram model of science used in the Chemistry Interactions 11 WorkText. Let me cover just a bit of history, to explain how I developed the Box Diagram .

Do you recall when the independent study unit (ISU) was introduced as a mandatory part of the grade 13 / OAC chemistry program?

There was no shortage of interesting investigations, but it quickly became apparent that students were not able to independently "do science." For example, students found the  instruction "Write a hypothesis" to be frustrating. Many of them told me that they could only fake a hypothesis writing their conclusions as a question. Students needed a workable model of science that enabled them to direct and channel their own thinking.

The Box Diagram can be described as an epistemological model, a model of how human beings can know things. It was derived from an earlier model, Gowin's Vee Diagram, often proposed in B.Ed and M.Ed programs as Gowin's Epistemological Vee.

Several years of action research followed, between 1995 and 2000. Jon McGoey and I tested and discussed this and other models in many classes at John Paul II High School in London, Ontario. We are convinced that the final Box Diagram is a valuable model of the epistemology of science. More importantly to teachers, we have found it to be a great pedagogical model for students.

    Jim Ross - London, Ontario

Jim Ross is well known in Ontario as a science teacher, a leader, a teacher researcher and a publisher of innovative resources for students and teachers.

Since he began teaching in 1976, Jim has taught chemistry, physics, general science, mathematics, technical drawing, co-operative education and technology courses to secondary students in Belleville, Walkerton, and London, Ontario. As Curriculum Coordinator in Belleville, his portfolio included science, math, history, geography and the social sciences.

ROSS-LATTNER EDUCATIONAL CONSULTANTS - In 1988, Jim and Mike Lattner founded Ross Lattner Educational Consultants. They have published over twenty titles, and their materials have been used in most of Ontario’s high schools over the past twenty two years. In 1996, Jim completed his master’s thesis: “The Graininess of Everyday Thinking”. His research focused upon the nature of students’ reasoning about new experiences. In particular, he explored the “units of understanding” that students constructed as they attempted to explain laboratory experiences.

As full-time faculty at the University of Western Ontario, Jim taught the intermediate / senior chemistry and physics pre-service teachers from 2002 to 2005. At the same time, he pursued his numerous teacher-research projects in both the classroom and the publishing field. The most recent Ross Lattner publications, “TableManners” and “Table Talk” reflect the cognitive structure of student thinking.
